Drawing and Observation

 I've always drawn, for me it's the bedrock for creativity whether its a painting or a sculpture. When you draw or sketch, you think about the subject in a subconscious way, making alterations to the drawing without thinking - responding automatically to what you see.   I use drawings as the starting point for many paintings, often combining more than one into a finished artwork. 


For me, there's 'observational drawing' which is sketching from life and drawing what's around you, and there's 'drawing for a purpose' which is when you have a painting or artwork in mind.  The discipline for each is slightly different.

With 'observational drawing' you respond directly to what you see, soaking up the feeling as you go along, storing some of it in your head for later. These drawings on many occasions can become finished artworks in themselves, as it's sometimes impossible to improve on them.

With 'drawing for a purpose' you combine elements from existing sketches, from what you remember and also from source references like thumbnail photographs, pulling them all together in a composition. I endeavour to not slavishly represent the scene as I do this.

Gardens Gallery exhibition.

  A LIFE IN PAINTING     An exhibition of figurative paintings by Cheltenham based artist Tim Turton.   THE GARDENS GALLERY, CHELTENHAM.   Wednesday 21st October to Tuesday 26 th  October.   This exhibition covers a range of subjects – Cotswold Landscapes, Still Life, Drawings, Horse Racing, Seascapes, Modern Dance, Still Life and on show will also be my portrait for NHS heroes.  Work will be for sale including framed and unframed paintings and drawings.   I predominately work in acrylic and love the versatility of this medium.  I have been described as a painter’s painter. I think this means that there is intrinsic beauty in the mark making and the design elements – a process I use to capture the essence of the subject.     ABOUT TIM TURTON.   After leaving Art College, I like many artists had to work in other trades to supplement my artistic career. Paintings for the exhibition.

I've been preparing hard for the exhibition in Winchcombe. As I look through my work and create more paintings I've realised that the 'feel' of a paintings starts with drawing and the subject. If I'm painting an energetic race scene the initial drawing is bold and the subsequent mark making, tone and colours reflect this.  If I'm painting a gentle scene then conversely more time is spent refining the initial drawing so that the mark making and colours are subtle and gentle - at times almost sepia.
